Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a bustling little place which we got to by travelling North on the train for 13 hours from Bangkok. It is crawling with bars, restaurants, shops and is easily explored on foot. It has big day and night markets and offers a variety of classes (cooking, massage, meditation...) and excursions (adventure, elephant parks, trekking in hilltribes...). There is no shortage of reasonable accommodation making it a kind of backpacking hound. The temperature here is also a bit more bearable which is quite a relief after the heat of Cambodia and the South of Bangkok.

Today, I took a cooking course in the oldest cooking school in Chiang Mai. It was really interesting. We started with a quick tour of the market and then the day went something like this:
Cooking demonstration of chicken in coconut cream soup
We cook at our own little station
We eat it

Cooking demo of noodle stirfry with vegetables
We cook at our own little station
We eat it

Cooking demo of red curry with fish
We cook at our own little station
We eat it

Cooking demo of mushroom stir-fry
We cook at our own little station
We eat it

Cooking demo of papaya salad
We cook at our own little station
We eat it

Cooking demo of steamed banana cake
We cook at our own little station
We eat it

We roll home

I think I might have a small dinner tonight and watch Chris eat most of the time!
In the meantime, Chris was organising our imminent departure into the mountainous area west of Chiang Mai. We have booked a Suzuki Vitara (exciting!) for 3 days and will go on a 600km loop which goes through a large national park and some hilltribe villages. It is meant to be quite beautiful and we are hoping to do a bit of camping along the way. Freedom!

  1. i miss you!
yannie is cooking up a storm here too, she has joined an online cooking circle, part of the daring kitchen and the daring baker, rules are: 8 out of 12 months you have to cook what they challenge you to, and then blog it, this month she's cooking orange tian, & is currently segmenting oranges, honestly no-one is particularly excited about the finished result, we aren't that wild about citrus. onions however, we love onions!

  2. When I went to Chiang Mai cooking school it was with a bunch of company wives and everything we cooked was served to our hard-working hubbies rather than to ourselves. Trozinjuste ! Did you also sculpt veggies with a scalpel? Your blog made me hungry so with Paulu, his Sea-lle friends and Lolo we went to a Vietnamese "Pho" soup place and then on to a swanky cupcake bakery. Both were divine though it was troubling to note that a huge chicken noodle (no claws) soup costs the same price as a trendy cupcake "royale."

We are having a great time out on the town with city walks, cool friends, non chain restaurants and even theater and Bruce and Brendan Lee's graves. Devin sends you his regards.

  3. Caz, the kitchen blog thing sounds interesting. you should send me the link to Leanne's and i can link it to this one.
Mothe, it sounds like you're having a good time in Seattle which is great. Unfortunately, we didn't contact Devin's dad which is silly but we were only in Cambodia for about a week and moving around a fair bit. Enjoy Washington state, we'll be moving on to pho soon as well!
