Over the last three weeks, and between the three of us, we have been sick eight times. Yes, that's right, EIGHT! That is a lot considering I can't remember the last times any of us were sick before this spout of illnesses (that's not completely true, I got sick in Nice but I was tired, jet-lagged and it was winter- apart from that, I honestly can't remember).
Here is how it went:
This is where we are up to so far but who knows what's next...
It's exhausting and frustrating and to make things worse, Hugo and I can't really take anything to feel better quicker. Hugo because he is too young and me because I am still breastfeeding which eliminates more or less everything. I can spray my nose with saline water, woohoo!
The last few weeks must have been tough on Hugo too. The poor thing had never even been sick until three weeks ago. Somehow, while it is obvious he is bothered by everything that has hit him, he is still more or less his cheery old self. Smily, energetic, with maybe a little extra whininess thrown in.
Chris and my physical exhaustion has somewhat transferred into our parenting style and we have been slower to react when Hugo wakes up crying or won't fall asleep. I guess patience is proportional to energy levels. We have both been spending much less time getting Hugo to sleep and have been letting him sort himself out. Sometimes, it means a lot of crying and sometimes, it's pretty quick. Overall, it seems to be getting easier.
Strangely enough, we have had some of our best nights in a long time too. Last night, I heard him from afar in the middle of night when he woke up. He cried for a little while but I just didn't have the strength to get up and neither did Chris. Fairly quickly, the night was silent again and all was well until morning.
Maybe that is the silver lining we have been waiting for...
Here is how it went:
- Hugo caught a gastro bug,
- Chris caught Hugo's gastro,
- I got a sore throat from being run down,
- Hugo got conjunctivitis (probably from rubbing his eyes with vomit on his hands),
- Hugo developed a fever and a cough,
- Chris got the cough and the fever,
- Hugo caught a cold, blocked nose and chesty cough,
- I caught Hugo's cold with the lot.

I guess you can only do what you can do and when so tired that it's impossible to get out of bed, best to just stay put rather than walking into walls and dropping things the way I do when sleep deprived.
